The changeover from a semi-automatic process to a fully-automatic one can have a multitude of benefits, as a leading footwear manufacturing company recently discovered.
The company has three production units producing a total of over 1,000 packages a day weighing anywhere from 5 to 25 kgs each. The existing process of packaging was a semi-automated one causing low productivity and operating inefficiencies. The Signode team proposed an online packaging system to simplify the process requiring much less of material handling and providing more ease of operation to the workers. Based on a cost-benefit analysis, the company decided to invest in the solution.
Following the implementation of the online packaging system, the process has been streamlined significantly resulting in higher throughput with employee wellness. In a review conducted post deployment, we found that the productivity of strapping of cartons has improved by about 50%! Moreover, the Signode quality strap delivers a higher break load and strength. It now requires fewer changes of strap roll due to higher meterage.
For the promoters of the company, this has been a good investment and is expected to yield returns in the months and years ahead.
