In 2016 Signode Australia USLM Systems assisted Signode Canada to set up the top lifting of aluminium ingots at the Canadina aluminium manufacturer’s site using the Signode Australian system of a pre-formed USLM M strap.
Having no definite ingot sizes or shipping details it was certainly a challenge to get the correct fitment of M straps to suit this application but a challenge Signode Australia took on with gusto.
In short we are now manufacturing and shipping 50,000 USLM M straps per annum to the Kitimat site for top lifting of aluminium ingots around the globe.
In June this year our Canadian colleagues called us in Australia with an urgent enquiry on how to top lift aluminium ‘sows’ using the Signode USLM system. Sows or T bar is a large aluminium block that is stacked in a 3 to 5 (feet/ meters) high configuration, becoming a challenge to top lift. This was a priority as the customer had been awarded a supply contract for supply into Europe & the first shipment was due to be shipped in August.
Being such a large product & not a lot of time to act with setting up a pre-formed M strap system & shipping into BC to lift this product we did some calculations of the size of strapping required along with the geometry for safe lifting techniques. An M strap was made that could be used as a sample to use as a loop pattern for the site and recommended a system to suit this application. Our Derrimut Plant and export people pulled out all stops to manufacture 40T of USLM Strapping & have packed up & shipped to Kitimat BC in order to meet with their extremely tight shipping schedules. Product arrived on time & Signode Canada supplied tooling resources & the task of applying USLM lifting straps to the product was shortly underway.
Below is an email from the customer to Signode:
“I wouldn’t want to forget yourself and Signode as being instrumental with your support with this. Your efforts, in particular, were significant in us achieving this milestone. Signode tooling to strapping and seals, you were right there with us. Thank you for all or your support. I know that any future challenges will be met with the same support.” |
